In this context, restricting their food increases lifespan. Is this due to “calorie restriction” extending lifespan in normally behaving animals, or because the control condition's overfeeding, stressed, and sedentary state shortens lifespan, which calorie restriction then simply mitigates?

When animals are confined in small cages with unlimited food and no need to forage, without mates, and sometimes in isolation, they are sedentary and overfed—we called this the "control" condition.
