Athens GA native, now a newly-minted Delawarean. Public radio nerd. Bass trombone and tuba. Tepid takes on classical music and jazz. Always and forever from Normaltown. Opinions are my own.
A few days behind, but still pushing ahead and catching up!

I wasn't familiar with this symphony, but I loved the pervading sense of motion throughout the piece. Roy and the band presented an energetic performance that added a lot to that motion as well. Overall, 9/10 powdered wigs for this one! I'll hit number 95 shortly!

I don't know... I could see Elvis in later career going back to his roots, doing more gospel, maybe country. I think unshackled Elvis might have been pretty interesting.

Bruggen and the Orchestra of the 18th Century on this, the Day of Alignment. Really enjoyable recording of a really powerful work!

Well, not the key signature itself, that's pretty innocuous. But F sharp minor is a bit of a thing.

Finished! I gotta admit, this one didn't grab me as hard as 60, but that finale is gold! I love the impertinent oboes!

Listened to the first three movements on the way to work! I'll finish up on the way home. Talk looking forward to the finale now!

I very much hope you find some grace and compassion, or at least a sense of shame. I'm glad I don't cover you guys anymore. This would've been a hard one to write.

This is not the Athens that I grew up in. It's not the town that remains in my heart. My town is a place where people feel included and safe. Those commissioners who did everything short of saying they weren't going to support this, while blatantly telegraphing that they weren't going to support it

The one bright spot in the discussion behind the rail came from Commissioner Jesse Houle, who spoke eloquently and forcefully in favor of the resolution. It's also important to recognize the members of the community who spoke during public comment. I hope they stay safe.

This comes on the heels of not only the rise in dangerous rhetoric across the country, but also the murder of a trans woman in Athens recently. In an effort to derail the move, some commissioners questioned the process, clutched their metaphorical pearls about procedure...
