Looking for a minuet and trio movement in Haydn 12 like John Travolta in that one scene from Pulp Fiction
#A-Haydn-a-Day

Madam, I'm Adam. (Actually I'm not, I'm Martin) And I listened to the never odd or even (actually it's an odd number) symphony 47 by Haydn, the "Palindrome," as part of #A-Haydn-a-day. It was too hot to hoot!

Checking in with #A-Haydn-a-Day and today was the delightful symphony no. 1, where it all began! Adrian Shepherd and Cantilena did the honors this morning.

Catching up on my #A-Haydn-a-day listening got my early, early morning off to a good start. Number fourteen came courtesy of the always fun Roy Goodman and the Hanover Band, while 103 was by Jeffrey Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra. Good stuff all around!

Getting caught up with A-Haydn-a-day and I turned to Roy Goodman and the Hanover Band for number 74. Roy and the band were one of my go-to ensembles when I hosted my classical music show back in the day, and they didn't disappoint.

I took a little break tonight from my #A-Haydn-A-Day listening to listen to (checks notes) The Creation... by... Haydn.

I saw a skunk this morning - maybe the first time I've seen one in the "wild" (or at least the parking lot). It was both awesome and kind of scary as we warily eyed each other from 25 feet apart.

For my #a-haydn-a-day today, it was actually two Haydns, 84 and 45. 84 was quite nice, but I love 45, especially that first movement. Still, I can't help but wonder if some of the orchestra had some shade to throw about that key signature!

So, I'm happily joining in on #A-Haydn-A-Day with Symphony 40, which is pretty rad. The first movement is so cheerful, and that last movement! First, I love a good fugue and second, I'm a sucker for sequencing around the circle of fifths. 12/10, will Haydn again!

Grouchy this morning (see my lengthy post earlier). That Haydn 40 is gonna hit just right on the way home.

I like to be positive, but last night, for the first time since moving away from Athens, I watched part of a commission meeting. I was deeply saddened, then disgusted by comments from some ACC commissioners during discussion of a resolution supporting the LGBTQIA+ community in Athens.

Here's a thing I learned today. The Capitol Christmas tree has a name! Chosen on social media. This year's tree is named Spruce Wayne. You're welcome!

Just listened to a BBC piece about Bluesky, while browsing Bluesky. Then my head imploded.

Hats off to all the music history and theory profs I had in undergrad who gave me the background to understand the incredibly smart music scholars I follow here. Sorry I was a typical brass player and hence a bad student. Thanks for making me learn things. I'm better now.

Finished the Biber Salzburg Mass this morning right as I pulled into the parking space. Heading home, I think it'll be Cipriani Potter, since @deeplyclassical.bsky.social mentioned him last week. Excited to discover a new (to me) composer!

TBH all I'm thinking about right now is lunch and a nap

This morning's listening: the Biber Missa Salisburgensis. (Just the Kyrie and Gloria so far.) This was a piece I got really into about ten years ago and then kind of forgot about, so I wanted to see if it still hits. Short answer, it def does.

One thing I think I've learned from my few days here. There seem to be a lot more herons out there than I thought.

So I work really weird hours (the perks of being a local host for Morning Edition) and generally, I like getting to work before 4am. Still, after many years doing it, I still get buffaloed by my body craving dinner food early. Like, 7am this morning, I can't stop thinking about ribs.

Later today, I'm doing an interview I'm really excited about. We'll be talking about birding and how it can have really positive effects on your mental health.

Call me crazy, but losing by eight to a juggernaut Cavs team, without Joel Embiid or Paul George. I mean, I feel this weird sense that I'm generally unfamiliar with as a Sixers fan. It feels like ... optimism? Don't worry, I'm sure I'll return to reality soon.

This morning's commute listening: Rossini overtures - Tell and Siege of Corinth. Also, I saw a couple of deer as I walked to the studio. So all in all a good start.

Y'all. The music in the @npr.org morning edition story on Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon is LIT!

This morning's commute listening: the Telemann Sinfonia Spirituoso. This is seriously one of the best things I've heard lately. Probably gonna listen again (different recording, any recs?) on the way home.

Ok, I've known this piece for awhile, but it's still just weird/wonderful to me that Bach wrote an entire cantata about coffee.
