I wouldn't have had expectations about numbers, but the experience in Norway is that electric cars drive more miles than petrol equivalents and displace a disproportionate amount of total miles driven. The research I saw mostly put this down to them being newer - people like to drive their new cars.

In a similar way they've slow rolled the roll out of electric cars, in an effort to maximise the profits on their existing models. Now it looks like China is going to eat their lunch by <checks notes> making better products, they're asking the governments to save them.

But the industry was much more interested in selling these as add-ons, rather than making them standard. In the same way as seatbelts were originally an optional extra.
