Also: Arma 1 (no, the other Arma 1) took place on a clean, sunny tropical island, and consensus is that it is extravagantly janky to the same degree as the rest of the series, so imo it's definitely a gameplay thing

Reddit post from P-Hustle titled "What American wars would you have volunteered to fight in?" The Indian Wars, the Phillipines, Haiti and Nicaragua in the 1920's, Vietnam, Nicaragua and El Salvador again in the 80's. As for would have, I "did" for Iraq and would love to get to the Ghan. Small wars are pretty enjoyable. It's the big ones, with days of artillery fire and inhuman brutality that take the fun out of fighting. But small wars (and Iraq and Afghanistan are indeed small wars) provide the rush of small combat actions along with the intellectual challenge of building personal relationships and infrastructure within the local community. Small wars are thinking wars, which I much prefer over the bloody slugfests of great power conventional warfare. Oh, and the revolution, because I'm Amuuurican.

Another good example is a lot of corners of US car culture (especially the more surface level stuff) where there's an ocean of very rich guys who think you can spend money into having The Best Car
a Singer Porsche 911, which is a "restomod" of an old Porsche that rips out most of the internals and replaces them with much faster and more modern equivalents, and then spruces up the interior to be basically a modern luxury car, with the idea being it's "the ultimate 911". Owners pay a ridiculous amount of money for these under the impression that it is possible to simply win at Having A Porsche without realizing you have to, you know, actually be into Porsches beyond a surface level. the result is this uncanny valley monstrosity of a car that doesn't know if it's from 1965 or 2025
