From a broken home, mature student, worked in 30 countries on 4 continents, married with grandchildren, read, write and take VERY long walks. God is nature. I am what I ingest. I treat others as I wish to be treated.
I have finally realised that most people's news and interest start with family then local then regional then national then international. Politicians and media who reverse this order, distance themselves from the majority, at their peril.

Many politicians are placemen, placed by either power, money or sectional interest. Keir Starmer is acting as the equivalent of a company administrator, an apolitical role, that tries to salvage a company that should be doing fine, that isnt, due to severe prior mgmt incompetence. A national doctor.

I have never witnessed a UK budget like this. Even the state media has its knives out for the democratically elected incumbent government. Without any sound rationale. The country needs a complete reboot to consider what is important and what is just noise.

I was wondering about precedent in law and its connection with the "whataboutism" that is often used as a counter to argument. Any lawyers out there, pls chip in.

The pressure that this UK government has been put under to date is unprecedented. It is like 1920's Spain when the powerful couldnt get what they wanted thru legal proces. At the end of all this, there is a sucker punch trap. Pay attention.

Just reading the Ukraine deal. Ukraine should join the EU. The EU should then leave NATO (if the USA is mediator between NATO and Russia, it is de facto no longer in NATO). The EU can set up its own aemed forces including Ukraine, and, like France already is, be independent of the USA.

Is there any genius mathematician out there who has developed an algebraic formula that links the effectiveness of politicians to their relationship with the media? Or is it simply inverse?

The media can't get out of the habit of rubbishing government. A habit developed over the past fifteen years with some justification. They need to focus on alternative workable solutions that will not piss off the markets yet reduce inequality.

Iraq = WMD = war
Venezuela = fentanyl = war
Once the example is set, others will use it as precedent.
A war in S America could provide the justification to suspend domestic elections in the USA.

On a busy train journey out of London, I stood in the corridor, next to a Pakistani man, my age, and his teenage son. The man was scolding his son in Urdu. When he finished, I smiled and said, I have no idea what you said but it sounds exactly like how I talk to my son. Both he and his son smiled.

So many angry people. Channel the anger into encouraging people to vote, the democratic process. If that doesnt work at the next elections, accept the result that the democracy of the middle ground has failed and that a new way or new country must be found.

Looking at life through a middle class lens is a Victorian (19th C) error. The vast majority live in debt and squalor to satisfy a tiny elite.

Democracy was a 20th century phenomenon that was reluctantly accepted as a counter to communism. As communism is no longer in vogue, democracy is under threat from the current iterration of narrow elitist self interest. They forget that the middle ground will always conquer in the long term.

When the time comes to disband ICE (and it will), make sure to get all the kit back otherwise you're going to have yourself a residual issue that might not go away as quick as you might like.

And my favourite for the English language film is "you must be the quarterback".

Just thinking of the punchline from the best foreign language film ever. "si c'est vrai, Caesar, c'est un catastrophe".

We learn nothing from 100 years ago. Fascism was supported by the elite as an agreeable alternative to democratic socialism. Communism was fringe and in its infancy. No one wants communism in the same way that no one wants fundamentalist religion. We want the middle ground of the 80%.

A James Comey prosecution may backfire if Trump reminds us of old allegations against him. The process will present a detailed catalogue of felonies for future use. The midterms are impending. We will soon know whether Trump is simply a "cri de couer" or a systemic change from the American people.

@angelmsattya.bsky.social The UK is a much better place than it has ever been but could do better. It has not kept pace with some other nations as it deals with its empire legacy, as in France. Having worked in over 30 countries, I wouldn't be anywhere else despite disgraceful fringe elements.

@zackpolanski.bsky.social I have been paying close attention to you of late and am suitably impressed. Two questions. How will you handle capitalism / the markets and how will you get the holy grail of voters, the white working class, on board? Best of luck.

You cannot bring up your children to know the difference between right and wrong then tell them that it's childish to think like that and that realpolitik is basically "might is right". This is not like getting over the tooth fairy.

I went to school with lots of Jewish boys. They were pretty normal to me. I learnt of their past and was horrified. I will never accept racial prejudice of any kind. The kettling of a population into ghettos or shetls or bantustans by force is obscene and inhuman.

Re Eurovision. All music is political. The banal, the protest, the martial, and the love songs, all have political uses. Eurovision is a political expression of commonality of music throughout nations. It is used and abused for political purposes by the governments of those nations.
