There are pragmatic political reasons for all this. Which is just another way of saying these aren't leaders in shaping public opinion. They are followers. May be OK as members of the coalition, but, the idea they represent the future? Not when bold leadership is called for, simply to survive.

sometimes it will just hit me that over a million americans died from covid in a short period of time and we never had a national mourning. we never collectively grieved. we never honored the dead. this feels like a failure

Living in the UK, I learned the House of Commons can initiate a recall of an MP but only after Parliament triggers. Once triggered, constituents would have 6 weeks to sign on with only 10% of the MP’s district needed to lose their seat. In the US, voters can’t recall federal lawmakers. 🥴
My political hot take is that US voters should be able to recall elected representatives via petition - at any time.
No more hiding behind election terms.

When I’ve talked to people who do really advanced math, they’ve basically crossed back into the humanities through high-level abstraction and do not sound like these freaks at all because it’s not simply the aesthetic of competence for them.

the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Los Angeles folks! The LA City Council will consider a major reform to the LARSO (rent stabilization ordinance) this upcoming Wednesday. The proposal passed the LA Housing and Homeless Committee last week. This would be the first major change/reform to the RSO in nearly 40 years!

The least most politically engaged people I know are texting me before 8am to say, “we won’t forget.”

So I don’t know man.
