Fried left-over steel-cut oats. Save leftovers in a buttered baking dish, then fry the next morning in butter until crisp (whole or in squares). Break out the maple syrup or the strawberry jam!

When you start to reread Dostoevsky’s short stories and find a picture from when you married him in 1999 as a bookmark in just the right place.

My husband’s crazy obsession with regional Chinese cooking continues. Not that I’m complaining.

Summer dinner on the porch: pork loin off the grill, local corn, and spiced plums (from our new book, COLD CANNING!).

Finally got brave enough to watch Fellow Travelers. As a gay guy who survived the plague, I was—as expected—wrecked.

About to reach the end of this shaggy beast. A new star appears and a cast of characters ready (or don’t). A meditation on light and dark … and whether they actually break through the quotidian ephemera of life.

About two-thirds done. (That is, on page 650 or so.) Roberto Bolaño’s final magnum opus, an epic nightmare of the U.S./Mexico border: 2666. Still don’t know why that’s the title. But it may be close to the number of deaths. Holy hell. Or unholy hell, as it were.

A wild ride. I started a book group at a local library fifteen years ago. It’s grown to two online sessions per book with members from across the U.S. and even the world. The count: 192 books in 15 years. A celebration this weekend.

Reading. Next selection for the book group I’ve curated for fifteen years. (The 192nd title 😳😎)
