People keep describing NIH and NSF "indirect costs" in grants as funding for university paper pushers.

Actually it is for the basic infrastructure of science. One consequence: millions of valuable laboratory mice are facing execution.

I am not a person who thinks exports are more important than imports, or that manufacturing is more important than services.

BUT those who do should wonder what will happen to the $1.6T/yr US manufacturing exports during a trade war.

People in the Federal Civil Service are sworn to uphold the Constitution, which includes the laws enacted under it.

When they do this, they are NOT obstacles to democracy, but an essential part of CONSTITUTIONAL democracy.

They take an oath to the Constitution, and when they insist upon the rule of law they are not "thwarting democracy" but are an essential part of CONSTITUTIONAL democracy.

For my first post here, a
chart I never published: Labor force participation for US natives by single years of age: 1994 vs 2023.

A small decline for youth (entirely explainable by increased in-school rates), no change for prime age, and small increases for seniors.
