Couple of my favourite paintings from The Hermit’s Sanctuary. Working on #BEOWULF was really exciting for me. I’d spent 7 years working on The One Ring, and we never got to the sea. It was nice to paint sea cliffs and beaches and seascapes. I also wanted to loosen up a bit more and try new things.

A band of crusty dungeoneers in black and white. At the fore is Enfield, a pale freckled half-elf woman wielding an axe and dagger, wearing a tough leather coat and gambeson. She has a headband holding back a short crop of white hair. She has tired eyes and is smoking a cheroot. To her right in the front rank is Webley, a kobold. He is in a ragged cloak, with a cropped tail, wielding a hammer and spike. Many keys are visible under his rags. To Enfield’s left is Sten, a dwarf man. He has dark skin and a geometric hair style and long curly beard. His right eye is a metal prosthesis. He has ornate ring armor, and a short sword and hammer. In the back rank is Bren, a half-giantess. She is a hulking white-furred creature with horns. Her hair is in elaborate plaits wrapped around her whole body. A massive two handed mace is on her shoulder. Beside her is Vickers and Welrod. Vickers is a tall lanky person with dark skin. Their face has some form of solid makeup applied to the entire top half. Their gear is monk or nun-like, long robes and a sort of habit or cowl. In their hands is a magical device, though which runs a long thin scarf-like band of woven fabric and beads. Welrod, their familiar, squats atop their head. Welrod is a small melon-sized frog-like demonic being with bat wings, horns, and goat-like eyes.
