Some folks confuse these things —who think the 'water movement' must be flawed, since bottled water is expensive, and contaminated water is poisonous. Clean water and #openaccess both cost $. We don't really need corporations selling packaged products, but communities funding reservoirs and taps.

My daughter made this clay model, and stuck it on my webcam. So, if we’re chatting, know that I’m also speaking with a jaunty goose.

Going through old books to clear shelf space, and donate. Look what I found! Precious four-leaf clovers. And one fiver! The pages of a Bob Dylan lyrics book are a good place to be pressed, I think. I was given this book for my 18th birthday. Perhaps I can keep it.

Fabrication of scientific images is easy and common. If you’re in doubt, go to PubPeer, search “duplication”, & consider the number of dodgy figures discovered in the past hours and days. Can't ignore the problem! Need to discuss it in the open, and better education.

New idea for a card game: “Tortured Academia”. It's based, of course, on the comic tragedy of tortured phrases in publishing ethics. You have to guess the proper academic term based on the absurd description. Fuller explanation on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/posts/mark-h...

I made an icon on the Noun Project about six years ago. This is my running total profit. Killing it!

Image detection tools are wild. Consider this PubPeer comment by @sholtodavid.bsky.social :

However long I looked, I couldn't see the match. But I put them in AfterEffects, messed with their rotation and proportions, and voilà! Would you see it by eye?

Ok fine, I will send three more emails, but only if I can have a beer at my desk, and only if it is thereafter the weekend.

Eek. Hard one for me. I see some weird things in these three spots.

When you buy second-hand Lego, and your kids complain they can’t find pieces in the giant bin bag, and it’s Sunday morning and the mania strikes.

Dr Lippman, I do not know you, but this is such an excellent first sentence. I'm convinced we would get along.

"The Office of Research Integrity is hardly renowned for its sense of humor."

Respectfully, whatever you got for Christmas, it isn’t as good as my pickled cabbage.

Friendly request to people at #AIMOS2024, since many of you work on paper mills: Pls tell me how I could make this even better. If there were a page 2, what do you think it should say?

It's #PublicationIntegrityWeek and today's topic is #plagiarism.
A useful bit of history is that 13thC Persian literary scientist, Shams-e-Qays had a strikingly modern account of different forms of plagiarism and their relative severity.

Totally! Very important, and our research integrity course talks quite a lot about it. Here's just a small section.

Been considering authorship practices in academia, and I think "Guest, Gift and Ghost authorship" no longer describes the full range of unethical issues that we see. Here's a draft longer list. Would love opinions.

Crabs! One of the cards from our game, "Tricky Questions: Image Duplication Edition", designed to help people identify faulty science. How many duplicated panels can you spot?
[Hint: They might be flipped and/or recoloured!]

How should we assess researchers?
It matters – for our culture, for equity, and because the existing incentive structures of academia fuel shoddy scholarship and fraud. This 1-page A3 discussion primer is free to use under a CC BY NC licence

Quick mockup of an idea for a card game: "University Hiring Committee". I don't yet know the rules. Maybe you make a team and it has to win funding and please the students, but if it's toxic, things go bad. Your ideas very welcome. #academicsky

I've had lots of interesting discussions lately about paper mills. Possibly the biggest current threat to trust in research? If you'd like to use our new resource to promote discussion, it's available under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC licence. trickygoose.training/downloads

Looking through my folder of abandoned training ideas. I'm sad this one isn't viable — a course for research supervisors, based on a menu full of extremely bad puns. "Regular ketchup" "Reliable sauces" "Confits of interest" #Academicsky
