Marks Barnes tells #PublicationIntegrityWeek about the ugly business of "plagiarism weaponisation" against prominent individuals. Complaints may be vexatious, based on ideological or political differences, but RIOs have the unenviable task of figuring out the validity of the allegations.

Day 3 of COPE's #PublicationIntegrityWeek kicked off with session from STM & Frontiers about the use of AI tools in detecting markers of fraud (e.g. image manipulation, paper mill similarity, peer review networks). Unusually optimistic discussion... it's not all doom & gloom!

It's #PublicationIntegrityWeek and today's topic is #plagiarism.
A useful bit of history is that 13thC Persian literary scientist, Shams-e-Qays had a strikingly modern account of different forms of plagiarism and their relative severity.

Intihal (verbatim copy): Shams-e-Qays mentioned that this “means ascribing the exact words of someone to self. This is verbatim copy of the words without change (or very small change).” 2. Salkh: Salkh means flaying and, as Shams-e-Qays mentioned, this “ means using words from another scholar and changing the order of them and using them again.” 3. Elmam: Elmam means approaching, which “means using a concept from another scholar and using them as own with different words.” 4. Naql: Naql means transferring: “This means that a scholar takes a concept from another one and transferring its context.” He gives an example of transferring a concept from a complaint to a eulogy context."

Day 2 of COPE's #PublicationIntegrityWeek 🚨started with a robust discussion about role of all stakeholders in ensuring integrity. Interesting points about educating researchers & changing incentives, but at times, speakers seemed to blame each other. All stakeholders need to take responsibility!
