I still have one from maybe 2009 and it’s a wonderful piece of tech. Small, beautiful and it reminds me of what a miracle it seemed. (I hated the earlier ones with the clickwheel through).

I feel this might be a contender for the least surprising piece of research this year!

(More generally, the term "isolation" is a misnomer and should be removed from the discourse because it sounds like a prison punishment. In reality, it's a removal from lessons to some kind of supervised environment and there can be a huge range of these.)

The other trending topic in UK education at the moment is the use of "isolation" and its possible effects on students. I found this interesting from Hannah Carter, a headteacher from near where I used to live in the UK. (I think she is @thehonesteducator.bsky.social) www.tes.com/magazine/ana...

But maybe it will all get overtaken by AI developments? Yet another thought-provoking blog from @carlhendrick.substack.com - this one a bit disconcerting. LLMs on their own hinder students but with tweaking could they actually turbocharge learning? substack.com/inbox/post/1...

So sorry to hear. Seems a far too common state of affairs.

I remember when I started my Masters at Birkbeck, we were all ridiculously crowded into a tiny seminar room. 8 weeks in, loads of room to stretch out!

Here's Amber's @instituteforgovernment.org.uk report

Which finds that the equivalent of 23,000 primary school classrooms are empty across England, the highest number since records began

(and there's loads of more fascinating data in there)
