What does it take to be a good Republican or Democrat?

A Deweyan angle on what makes for good citizens:

The title of this article nails why and how today's politics exhausts us.

But it strikes me that there is nothing "settled" in democracy; there is only more conversation.

To refuse to have it (which @dandrezner.bsky.social doesn't, but others do in the comments) isn't a viable democratic choice.
The opportunity costs of “let’s debate vaccines!” Is going to be massive and emblematic of the “we’ll settle this on Joe Rogan” mode of politics. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-opport...

Am reading applications for an assistant professor position and.

I am amazed by the number of applicants with "forthcoming" articles that fit directly with the job description and not at all with applicants' history.

Is this a thing people do?

In the 1970s, John Rawls "was one of the first champions of what we would now call predistribution, and his ideas point toward an economic agenda that would tackle inequality at its source by promoting good jobs, a fair distribution of wealth and greater democracy in the workplace."

I guess if you consider that Texas was originally Mexico, then Trump was right about who would pay for that wall www.texastribune.org/2023/10/31/t...

Rather than napping or watching football today, I'm thinking about wacky 2024 scenarios. Here's one!

Imagine a Romney-Manchin ticket wins enough states (maybe just Utah!) to keep Biden and Trump from winning 270 electoral votes.

That would throw the 2024 presidential election to Congress.

Five consensus candidates for Speaker of the House that might emerge this week:

Simone Biles
Dwayne Johnson
Matthew McConaughey
Serena Williams
Lady Gaga

But really, let's all be honest, the thing that would pull us all together right now is:

Travis + Taylor Swift power-sharing agreement

I'm happy to report that I have a job!

Which means I am tickled, rather than enraged, by having just been rejected for an academic job that I applied for *fifteen months ago.*

As a point of reference, that was back when Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House, and England still had a Queen.
