Reluctant Angeleno
Grinnell, where I’ve been for the last five months, has a spate of public parks that no one seems to know much about. I found this one between a cemetery and a trailer park.

So, the telecom company in Grinnell isn’t sending out instal crews until Wednesday. I think I’m in for a rude welcome to the Midwest.

Tonight’s my last night in California. My time here was hard and I don’t have a lot of pics. I do have this one: it’s a tree I met when it was an accidental sapling, a weed. I wouldn’t let anyone kill it. I hope it’s safe without me.

Internet Archive's founder, @brewster.kahle.org, spoke with @wbur.org's Megna Chakrabarti about the lawsuits against the Internet Archive, the importance of archiving the web, and the "constantly renewed mythological goal" of the Library of Alexandria.

Over the Christmas break, our daughter introduced us to Switzer Falls. It’s up by Altadena, and firmly in the burn zone. It’s been a weird few days, being thankful for our safety but also mourning the loss of treasured haunts.

I attended a service at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Monrovia, CA today. Not my usual church but I did sing in an all-male evensong service there last fall; here’s a pic:

I’m moving to Iowa in January (I know: that’s probably the worst time). I visited the Capitol building grounds while there for my interview; what else is there to see and do between Des Moines and Iowa City?

Since we arrived in SoCal almost 10 years ago, Vroman’s has been a family hangout, not just a bookstore. I hope this turns out well. Anyone want to go in on it with me?

I thought Hava Nagila was the Montreal Canadiens fight song when I was a boy. Watching hockey on Saturday nights, I heard it played about 20 times a game.
Is That ‘Hava Nagila’ I’m Hearing at the Club?
The beloved Jewish folk song, which is about a century old, is appearing more and more at sporting events, private parties and trendy bars.

We really need to stop being so paranoid about punctuation in emails. A period is just a period and is proper for most sentences. Almost nothing needs to end with an exclamation mark!

Classical music fans: Jeno Jando died. In 96, I saw him play in Ottawa. He did a record signing and the line was out the door and around the block. He was a classical version of an underground indie star. https://www.naxos.com/News/Detail/?title=In_Memoriam_Jeno_Jando_19522023

As part of Hot Nixon Summer, I watched Martha Was Right, a short doc about the very outspoken wife of one of those who went to jail for Watergate. Next up: All the Prez’s Men (the book)
