I am out here in these streets with a target on my back. I’m a native English speaker. I’m highly educated. I have a valid passport. I’ve worked for state government which means I have a clean background check. And that existential fear still rises as I scramble to get my birth certificate.

The fact that my mom never spoke Spanish to me as a child despite being a native speaker of Spanish herself is hitting me like a ton of bricks right now. Right in the sternum.

The fact that I am mixed-race (with African-American) doesn’t matter. Nuance collapses in the face of tyranny. “You look like you come from a Spanish-speaking country. Show your papers.” That’s where we are at.

Did anyone really care if it was Hispanic or Latino or Lantinx or Latine? It was always “you look like you came from a Spanish-speaking country, prove yourself.”
