This is a great thread—and why I’m often disappointed at superficial renderings of cults in fiction. A cult isn’t a writing wild card, where you don’t have to do any research (of which there is a TON by the way).
As a SFF writer who is very interested in religion, in fiction and in real life:

Any attempt to lay out rules or laws or even guidelines for "how to depict religion in fiction" has not thought the matter through, IMO.

I took a basic drawing class and most of it was "look at the thing. No LOOK."

I finished this godforsaken teethpulling blood sweat and tears $&#*@!#*% book! This is my fifth complete work and it took me TWO YEARS including many many many months of staring at my screen in cosmic horror and despair. I never thought I would finish it.

But it is done!!

It's so so fun when you're doing some historical research for your book and come upon something fascinating that is perfect to include in your book and your creative mind is on fire, but it's also terrible because your book that was almost finished just got longer :(

If you’re a HarperCollins author, I strongly suggest getting together with your agent and sending a very strong preemptive “FUCK THIS” their way.
