Trump wrote in a social media post on Saturday that he had instructed the US Department of War to prepare for "possible action". He warned that he might send the military into Nigeria "guns-a-blazing" unless the Nigerian government intervened, and said that all aid to what he called "the now disgraced country" would be cut. Trump added: "If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians!" US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth replied to the post by writing: "Yes sir. "The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities." Trump's threat has triggered alarm across Nigeria. Many on social media are urging the government to step up its fight against Islamist groups to avert a situation where foreign troops are sent into the country.

On July 24, President Trump issued an executive order (EO) entitled, “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets.” This regressive order aims to increase punishment through policing and institutionalization of people who are unhoused and criminalization of programs that offer harm reduction services. It also seeks to pressure state and local governments, nonprofits, and other service providers to use these costly, punitive methods instead of proven strategies to reduce homelessness, such as “housing first” programs What are the Limits of this EO? Executive orders do not create, amend, or change existing law, and this order is no exception. The executive order cannot change how state and local governments address homelessness on their own. While the Trump administration can threaten to limit federal funding, state and local governments have the power to choose the housing policies that are best for their communities. The federal government cannot direct local or state law enforcement agencies. Federal grant programs are created and funded by Congress, and federal agencies may not be able to impose new conditions on grants without congressional approval. tHE REALITY ABOUT HOMELESSNESS The EO promotes false and negative stereotypes about people who are unhoused. The EO claims, without support, “[n]early two-thirds [or 66%] of homeless individuals report having regularly used hard drugs like methamphetamines, cocaine, or opioids in their lifetimes.” However, according to 2022 HUD data, only 16% of people who are unhoused (unsheltered, in emergency shelter, or transitional housing, or 95,001 of 582,484 people) report chronic substance abuse. It also claims without support, that “[a]n equally large share of homeless individuals reported suffering from mental health conditions.” Yet, according to 2022 HUD data, only 21% of people who are unhoused (122,888 out of 582,484 people) have severe mental illness. Moreover, the relationship between substance use, mental illness and lack of housing is complex. According to the National Coalition for Homelessness, many people who are unhoused develop mental health or substance abuse issues after prolonged periods of homelessness due to the lack of safe and affordable housing.

Trump has continued his quest to kill off congestion charging in his native city, however, prematurely declaring success in this endeavor in a memorable February post on X in which he was depicted in an oil painting wearing a crown, triumphantly standing in front of the Empire State Building. “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!” the president wrote. Trump’s Department of Transportation has attempted to withdraw federal approval of the scheme but its deadlines to end congestion pricing have so far been thwarted by the courts and the department has, in frustration, replaced its own lawyers, accusing them of undermining its case. Sean Duffy, the US transportation secretary, has said the charge is unfair to drivers and is “classist” against the working poor (even though they overwhelmingly take buses or trains, rather than drive), and threatened to cut federal funding to New York transit. The Trump administration canceled $188 million in federal grants meant to reimburse New York City for sheltering migrants, saying the money was being spent to support illegal immigration and leading the city’s mayor to vow to fight the clawback.
