Our university’s NIH CTSA (Clinical and Translational Science Award) was just cancelled for having some keywords that just mean it will serve ALL people in Utah. This funds research that moves discovery science into clinical therapies. This is literally the mandate of the NIH! 😰 🧪

I’m going to continue to work until my computer access is revoked,” Lennox said. “Then I’m going to volunteer. I’m going to keep working as best I can to support the veterans. That’s what I’m here for.”

A Marine vet thought he found a 'home' working at the VA. Now he's one of 1,000 fired.
Andrew Lennox, who was terminated from the VA, noted the irony of the VA claiming it had fired some veterans to help veterans.

Half of EIS, the CDC's renowned "disease detectives," gone. These folks respond to emergencies in the US and around the globe, and are now in tatters.
CDC's "disease detectives" halved as part of DOGE cuts at health agencies
More than 1 in 10 of the health agency's workers are being let go, including an entire new class of CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officers.

The EIS symbol is a shoe with a hole worn in the sole, to signal they wear out shoes tracking down the causes of outbreaks. They serve 2 years on the promise to go anywhere with almost no notice. They ended smallpox, identified HIV, beat back polio, solved dozens of new diseases. Without them? Oof.

If this reporting stands up (and it appears confirmed by multiple sources): devastating.

The EIS is the front-line SWAT team of disease detection in the US and globally, and also the training ground for new generations of public health workers.

No EIS, no boots on the ground for outbreaks. ->
Major news:

Entire first-year class of the Epidemic Intelligence Service must be out by 5pm, sources say.

Also: a major CDC contractor "just let go." Others may follow.

This is an attack on our ability to detect outbreaks.

I oversaw global health programs at @USAID.

They reached 100s of millions of people, added 6 extra years to the lifespan of children in partner countries, and were eradicating health threats worldwide.

What insanity and cruelty to break that.

Huge thanks to @vox.com for writing on the crucial issue of funding and meeting cessation at NIH.

Also, @celiaford.bsky.social wins for characterizing study sections as "jury duty for nerds".

Researchers are terrified of Trump’s freeze on science. The rest of us should be, too.
Government support is essential to science. The Trump administration kneecapped it.
