Arrived in Zurich on a night train from Graz. After attending wonderful concerts in Salzburg last week, I’m now heading towards Lucerne. Enjoying this quite rare opportunity to experience the live performances of his works, especially those involving live electronics, over a short period of time.

The centrepiece of the last night’s concert was definitely explosante-fixe, though I was structured by Nono’s A Pierre. A few months ago I heard a performance of this, which I found terribly boring. But I was wrong—it’s so amazing how good electronics can transform the impression of a work!

Fulfilled my duty as a Japanese national, voting in the 2025 election in Vienna this morning. And now heading to the airport to fly to Manchester for the Music Analysis conference!

I’m having a pretty packed and exciting time in Basel and had an excellent visit to Lisbon last week, where I attended a conference. I haven’t had the energy to post anything recently, but I shall continue to take notes on the concerts I attend. A wonderful evening with Ensemble Nickel. Bravo!

So lovely to come back to Basel. After an intense but good start of my research stay at the Paul Sacher Stiftung, I visited the Fondation Beyeler. The exhibition on Northern lights was somehow appropriate for my current focus on Kaija Saariaho. I also enjoyed the feeling of spring in the garden.

What a fascinating programme with an interesting contrast! The performance by Klangforum Wien and PPCM members was tight, emotional and exciting, as always.

Acousmatic listening is not recommended here. I wasn't sure if I was going to watch the whole video at first, but in the end I couldn't stop myself – this is a kind of entertainment. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtEG...

Following young friends in Graz, I’m joining the protest against the Steiermark’s funding cut for cultural sectors including performing arts and music. #KulturlandRetten

I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to make it to Paris on the 4th of March for the event, but thanks to a colleague I've discovered that online viewing is also available. The Zoom link can be found on this page: chmcc.hypotheses.org/15454.

It’s been so wonderful to listen to various works and performances of new music and talk to both established and young emerging composers during Impuls. Feels like all the hustle and terrible administration involved in moving to Graz has already paid off. More to come on the last day tomorrow!

Impuls Day 2. A huge bravo to Chaos String Quartet! What an incredible programme with a subtle but dynamic performance!

Feeling energiesed after hearing the talents of young musicians in PPCM (Performance Practice in Contemporary Music) at KUG. It was far beyond the level of a class concert!

Concerts that I went to during the last quarter of 2024 were pretty amazing, most memorable including those in which I witnessed the premiere of works of Clara lannotta and Bernhard Lang as well as the live performances of Merzbow and Ryoji Ikeda. The first in 2025 is this!

In the early afternoon of 5 January 2016, I was looking at some sketch materials of Le marteau sans maître with my mentor in Nice. When we were about to take a break, my mentor noticed that he had just received an email from a Boulez expert whom we both knew well. Then he said, ‘Boulez est mort…’.
