I’ll never stop loving this show because in a lot of ways it represents me. Both my silly goofy nature that I’ve always kept and the emotional weight and maturity that I’ve grown to carry. I know that’s a fairly common experience with this show and that makes it so special.

And yet, here we are. 14 years have passed and I am still obsessed with everything this show does. We have a show that’s being touted as the series’ most emotional yet, continuing to handle these topics with grace all while maintaining the whimsical nature that the show stands by

And now, we reach the first episodes airing in my adulthood. The first episodes airing while I’m out a trans woman, and weirdly enough THIS is when they go back to Fionna and Cake. When this was announced I didn’t know how this could be more gripping than Together Again.

And that was something that only continued into the later seasons, and eventually hit it’s peak with Distant Lands. It was a show that handled topics like death and familial trauma and yet still Finn saying shit like “mathematical” fit. This was now a show that could make me cry.

a show that had genuine legs as a serialized show, starting to grow interesting and engaging lore and drama. It didn’t lose that silly goofiness, much like I didn’t, but it now managed to handle topics with more nuance and maturity than it had before. It faced reality a bit more.
