Excited to share the 1st direct evidence of quartz clouds in the atmosphere of a transiting #exoplanet! With #JWST MIRI we found nanoparticles of quartz, SiO2, causing a spike in the planet's spectrum at 8.6 micron unveiling the Oxygen locked in the clouds

Dr. Karikó's story is inspiring, but let us remember: her story describes a failing system. "Focus on what's next" is good advice, but in Germany "next" is on the street after 6 yrs of Postdoc and maybe soon after 4 yrs. She spent almost 30 yrs at Uni. #ichBinHanna www.cnbc.com/2023/10/06/n...

On Monday, Katalin Karikó won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, but her journey to prestige has been punctuated with more hurdles than catalysts.

I feel like I’m the only person that finds Dr. Kariko’s story extremely depressing and discouraging? Like how many scientists were treated the same way and didn’t get justice/revenge/ vindication via a Nobel Prize?

How long are things going to happen like that ? Cuz nothing has changed.

I am disappointed that the NSF GRFP does not support students in PhD programs who earned masters degrees elsewhere. I suspect that this restriction is especially limiting to BIPOC students and Bridge students.

The take home message is that even if the entire world tells you that you're working on something unimportant and you struggle to get funding or keep a job there's a one in a million chance you'll get a prize with which you could buy a two rooms apartment multiple decades later

MPIA is hiring another APEx fellow! I had a great time there as a fellow and highly recommend applying. Happy to answer any questions about my experience or the department. 🙃
We’re hiring postdocs at the APEx Department at MPIA! We have two ads, one for an independent fellow and the other focused on atmospheric retrievals.  Please spread the word! Application deadline Nov 30.

Running GCM simulations for a JWST proposal and they keep crashing over and over again. At this point half of me really wants to get the proposal accepted so it was worth it and the other half wants it to be rejected so that I'll never ever have to deal with this planet again.

The Supreme Court is hearing a case next week about who can enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act

It's been flying under the radar, and I think that's a big mistake

Rights Without Remedies Might As Well Not Exist
In Acheson Hotels v. Laufer, the Supreme Court could further undermine this country's already shoddy system of civil rights enforcement.

I hate how with moving, there is a compromise in terms of sustainability between not having a car and buying used furniture... clearly, it's more sustainable to not have a car, but it also means I'll have to buy some furniture new bc I don't have as much flexibility w/ picking up used furniture.

Taking a full month off to move from Heidelberg to Chicago 100% was the right call. So far, this move has felt so much more manageable than the last one. That being said, I could easily use another week off to deal with moving stuff. 😅

Good Bye, Heidelberg! It's been a great 1 year and 8 months. Thank you, @laurakreidberg and everyone in the APEx department for making my first postdoc a great experience!

A bit sad to be leaving so soon, but also excited to start my 51 Peg b fellowship at UChicago.
