... if there was enough money, then one would assume that labourers played a bigger role - but note that small land owners might also need to earn some extra money at times when there was less work on the farm... there was probably no clear divide between land owners and labourers.

This might be their own labour, but of course includes supplying enslaved labour and crucially also draft animals (even in classical Athens, where there was money to pay the workers, it seems that the labour intensive work was done at times when there isn't much agricultural work, i.e. summer)...

Depends where you are - but for smaller communities the model is presumably that of a community project, rather than conscription, where the community essentially decides to contribute, in honour of their gods and for the city as a whole. ...

The facial expressions are fun. Mary clearly wants to get out of there, which is of course not unreasonable for the mother of a small child, and they might even get a proper group shot and be done if the two guys in the back finally stopped fooling around.
