Exactly! It's hard to measure if it's worth it or not. I want to ensure we're reaching everyone who needs our services but supporting deranged billionaires and the hateful environments they're creating also causes harm....

You should be able to get a lot of emergency sharing information through Nextdoor. They prioritize posts from local health and police departments, which can be helpful

The NEW Center and Washtenaw Health Initiative in Ann Arbor often post local nonprofit job openings through their email newsletters. If you haven't already looked, the Michigan Nonprofit Association's job board has a ton of great listings. I hope you find something soon!

would result in better staff health. Plus it might help when discussing staff contributions with board members. Not saying it will work but I'm going to see if I can experiment with it! It's cool to hear how other EDs, like yourself, are trying to incorporate similar goals :) /2

That's fair! at the moment, we do that with our team and pay a higher hourly so our workers can have a competitive salary while working slightly less hours. However, inspired by mothers who worked out the monetary value for their work, I wonder if assigning monetary value to our caregiving work /1

I was thinking more along the lines of categorizing it as a work responsibility. "Due to the nature of our work, we expect candidates to set aside X amount of hours for self-care and burnout reduction."

All of the work we do to keep ourselves from burning out and ensure we continue to witness/advocate rarely gets acknowledged in a job description which means a lot of it is done on our personal time. I'm hoping things will change so we have less of a burnout issue and can keep doing the work :)

Other examples: being a witness to/advocating for local suicides, dealing with the justice system because so many people who need treatment are put in a cell instead. Basically, it's the emotional toll that all of this takes and the work that allows us to cope with that toll - therapy meditation etc

It's a term I made up* while talking this over with my ED today (*as far as I know, no one else uses it this way). We're using it to describe the emotional impact of our jobs. For us, this looks like hard calls with struggling caregivers or frustration with a broken mental healthcare system

It's the threat of needing to search for a grant-related email or a "per my previous email" from a board member. I gave up. My email inbox count is now 21k 🤣

No problem! We're a mental health nonprofit, so a lot of our volunteers limit their social media use. Discord was a nice compromise, since it allows for community building/information sharing without people having to wade through the negative side of social media.

Threads felt too messy for us compared to Bluesky. We also added Discord for community building among our volunteer base.
