PS 🙄
I looked again and seems it can be downloaded online for free?? Currently on my little phone and maybe I should wait until I get home to the iPad and can see what I am doing 😀

Is there any way your paper can be read separately? I am definitely interested in Lindsey, not so sure about the rest. It looks as though I would need to buy the whole book?

My cousin and I had a plan. We were going to stay awake and creep downstairs as it got close to time. Sneak in behind my mum, aunt and uncle watching the tv. But of course we fell fast asleep!

My Grandma was of similar vintage, 1894-1990. She absorbed everything and I often think what remarkable developments she saw happening in her lifetime.
We also have a tradition of saving newspapers from important days, I believe there is one for this, somewhere in my Museum of Family Stuff!

I remember that day (night) well. Mum and I were staying with an aunt. My cousin and I were sent to bed, told it was too late for us to stay up, so we didn’t see the actual moment as it happened 😕
When we got home my grandma was quite cross, she would definitely have let me stay up.

It is a long time since I last drove past there.
Remarkably, these days, for such a tiny spot there is a passenger railway station. Not sure if it is still operative but it certainly used to be. A colleague lived in the village and travelled to work daily on the train.

I had that job too!
Never me doing the knitting, I admit to being totally useless in that department 😆

I have driven past that church a number of times but never stopped to look. I love how it stands on the bend of the road right in front of you. Quite imposing.
I am also intrigued by the adjoining Apethorpe Palace but keep forgetting to check its limited tour times.

I have done something similar on a smaller scale and from a different angle.
Having read the full War Diary of my Grandfather’s Field Company I felt a link to the two longest serving COs whose hand writing I read daily, names so often mentioned. Both lie in France, I researched both, visited one.

I was over the moon to find his Field Co on a flimsy scrap of paper that mum had saved without realising its significance. Enabled me to research his wartime experience and follow his footsteps. I always feel so close to him when in Ypres, although he did spend time in France too.

I just watched, sure I saw it before as I always knew my Grandfather (RE) served in Ypres area and I was always intrigued. Now I know he was between Boesinghe & Essex Fm for 6 months in 1915.
Poignant because yesterday I stood at his open grave as my cousin was laid to rest with our beloved Pop.

I haven’t had chance yet to check and compare how much of this is ‘new’ new or already available online on other sites. But good news for those who only use Ancestry.

I had arranged a few days exploring the area in September but had to cancel because my little cat was dying ☹️ I haven’t been around there for quite a few years so planned to visit a few places in the area including Rudston. Will rearrange in Spring.

5 November only, whatever the day and whatever the weather (unless really bad I suppose when it moved to the next night but I don’t remember that happening). In Yorkshire we always had Mischief Night on 4th.
Yesterday was also 51 yrs of passing my driving test 😳👵🏻👵🏻

I didn’t know about Second Star on the Right but I used to connect the Land of Green Ginger with one of my favourite childhood books, of the same name.

Been there a few times.

🥺

I’m pretty sure no one did that ‘when I were a lass’ 😆 but some did take Mischief Night a bit too far!
October 31, 2025 at 7:41 AM
2/2 Mischief Night when you could knock on the neighbour’s door and run away or tie their gates together. Innocent little tricks, all expected.
Fireworks were one night only, November 5th whatever day of the week, whatever the weather (maybe if stormy it shuffled to the next night, I don’t recall).
