A great article which touches on the basics of the GNU Readline library (which almost all modern shells and REPLs use), its long history and its relationship with #Emacs (the source of its default keybindings) twobithistory.org/2019/08/22/r...

People used to ask if I was German when I was a pup. Now they ask if I'm Russian when I have a weird beard and no hair.

And there's barely any pay for it. Doing a PhD has always seemed attractive to me, but doing it with zero external support felt like martyrdom. Especially after talking to PhD peers who had apartments from parents and those who had nothing.
One of the things that amazes me about scientific research is how much work goes into it. It’s just crazy. I mean all things require work, but it’s just so far above anything else (writing, software development.) I understand all the complaints about replication, what’s missing is the labor.

I recently managed to fix yet another failure of ASIC mining hw. The Z15 machine has three hashboards, each of which has three ASICs. This is what the hashboard looks like. The hole in the PCB is due to a previous failure in the power circuitry.

Adi Shamir's advice to young researchers:

1. Read, read, read. Back in the eighties, I read every cryptography paper out there. Once that became impossible, I read the abstract of every paper. Now I read at least every title.

I've put together a webpage that renders the ePrint author list I maintain for @eprint.bsky.social. It's a separate website to enable listing by the author name used in papers, rather than the Bluesky display name or handle.

"And so, if you can’t do these things [such as getting trans people hormones even though it may be illegal where they are] —that might be disapproved by authority, but are actually perfectly ethical and the right thing to do— because you fear the consequences? Then that leads to a worse society."
