Dear Europe 👇

"The evidence overwhelmingly shows the opposite, that Trump will always find a way to support Putin in the end, that his occasional critical tweets about Russia are window-dressing, that he despises European countries and would be happy to see Ukraine fail (and even cease to exist)."
Hi all, just sent this out. Trump and Putin tried hard to corner Zelensky and put him in a terrible position. In return he has shown that the best way to deal with both bullies is to stand up to them and dont play by their rules. It’s a lesson Europe must learn now. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Make no mistake: the House budget bill, as currently written, is effectively a full repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act clean energy measures. This renders all IRA tax credits as-good-as-dead. Goodbye nuclear industry. Goodbye US manufacturing investments. Hello higher energy prices.
The fight over the future of the Inflation Reduction Act is here. This week on a special SHIFT KEY, we guide you through the budget reconciliation process & break down the biggest provisions in the House budget bill with former Senate & Treasury advisor Luke Bassett heatmap.news/podcast/shif... 🔌💡

Russia is now bombarding Odesa with ballistic missiles. Remember, European leadership pledged that if Russia did not agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire by yesterday, they would hit Russia with super new sanctions. Yet, here we are…

My post yesterday, yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/the-..., discussed how 3 of the top-20 deadliest heat waves in history occurred in 2024. The 9,000+ deaths during the summer heat wave in Europe ranked as 2024’s deadliest weather disaster and is the fifth-deadliest heat wave in world history.

And who, you might ask, is putting this pressure on the EU to backtrack on climate goals? Yep, it's ExxonMobil and friends.
Well. That’s going to be fun.

Martin Porter, executive chair of the @cisl.cam.ac.uk said there was a “clear risk” that “a broad simplification agenda unravels policies which businesses have already invested against”.

So much for EU aim to use climate action/sustainability as a growth driver.

Hard to NOT see this is entirely incoherent at best, cynically hypocritical at worse.
The double standard of crying overregulation and immediately using the full strength of the permitting hammer to block wind shows that Republicans are not serious about fixing permitting. It's a smoke screen to enrich the fossil industry while blocking competition from clean, cheap energy 🔌💡

Despite the nonsense we saw from Trump yesterday, please know that climate progress is continuing through other channels...

This is important to keep in mind, every day.
Good climate news this (and last) week
1 China reaches peak oil
2 Global electric vehicle sales up 25% in record 2024
3 US bans future oil & gas over 625m acres of waters
4 EU bank regulator tightens ESG rules
5 China’s first-ever energy law enters into force

I think folks think far too intensively about economics and GHG bean counting vs. organizing to build power & alignment for intensified climate action.

Put differently, we should stop centering think tanks who theorize about climate action & center folks who actually organize for climate action.

Two things we've seen from Trump in the past week:
- Appointing superspreaders of misinformation to high office.
- Announcing that social media media platforms will no longer be allowed to act against misinformation.

It's going to be quite the ride.
