The leanness of Saariaho’s late scores is like sonic nouvelle cuisine. The simplest things become magically beautiful and fresh.

I don’t quite know what to make of Hermann Nitsch’s music, which keeps making me want to revisit it. That’s… good? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think they meant absurd rather than absurdist.

There are some hues I struggle with in music. Like “epic,” for instance. I can’t connect 99% of times. That oh so rare 1%, though… full body chills. Like this

Now when I hear loud tapping, I just know it’s Hawk Hudson sitting on top of my a/c again. So beautiful, but such a noisy jerk.

“(…) in music, genre and kinship often co-present, as predicted by its root, gen- (genetic, genotype, and even gender).” - George Lewis

When I’m freaking out about life and it’s cold and gray outside, few things comfort me more than a good feijoada.

The Music of Julius Eastman and Arthur Russell Coming to REDCAT
Source: REDCAT. The music of legendary collaborators Julius Eastman and Arthur Russell is singular and boundless. These are expansive, quintessentially queer pieces, in which every moment is full of choice. Their profound and personal sounds demand that performers become unabashedly themselves, merging and getting lost in the notes and rhythms, finding themselves again and again, and emerging whole and newly committed to self.

One of my favorite recent reads that are not about music composition but kind of are. Highly recommend it.

Friends in Reykjavik: really cool concert TONIGHT by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Bjarnason, featuring my “Orun” and other contemporary works. So wish I could be there, but I know it’ll be great. ❤️

Thoughts on adjudication season: there are SO MANY absolutely incredible young composers out there. The level is stratospheric. I wish there were more opportunities, more spots in programs. I could easily form a team of 50 whose music would make your jaw drop. Listening to their music is humbling.

Emilia Perez is one of the worst examples of appropriation I’ve seen in a while. The songs alone are enough to drive any native Spanish speaker mad. It’s like old-school French colonial take on Mexican culture. So bad.

I am returning to Dijon this summer, for the International Academy of Musical Creation with New Media 2025.
This is a great opportunity to have new work, especially multimedia, performed in a supportive environment.
Applications are rolling (until 1 June):
