This was the same year than Anquetil, already a record-setting winner of 5 Tours, was convinced by his agent that another Tour victory would not increase his value on the critérium circuit + on the day the Tour started was racing on the Isle of Man (I kid you not - the Isle of Man!).

Fun fact: Claudio Chiappucci's father served in the army with Fausto Coppi in Africa during WW2.
Here they are both winning a stage finishing in Sestriere in TdF 1952 and 1992.
