Phenomenal reporting and storytelling by @maxblau.bsky.social and Zaydee Sanchez, and stunning visuals by @zisiga.bsky.social and Shoshone Gordon.
Over the past few years, I’ve been fascinated with one of the largest federal investigations happening in Georgia, known as Operation Blooming Onion. So I partnered with Zaydee Sanchez to uncover the untold story of an unnamed victim at the heart of the case. 🧵

As hurricane season approaches, I want to tell you why I spent the past 4 months reporting this new story about Hurricane Helene.

In 1999, I spent 13 hours in a car on a gridlocked interstate with my 3-week-old baby during the disastrous mass evacuation from Hurricane Floyd.

NEW: As Hurricane Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, communities along the Cane River in the Black Mountains were particularly vulnerable.

But there were no evacuation orders, and few grasped what was coming.

I grew up in the western foothills/southern piedmont of NC. As soon as I saw the news of Helene, I knew the devastation in these small towns just to our north was inevitable. This is the one of the best pieces of journalism I have read in recent memory. incredible, heartbreaking stories. read this.
As Hurricane Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, the predictions were grim.

But there were no evacuation orders, even for the people living in homes along vulnerable rivers and creeks.
