We’ve just had an independent leftist Gaeilgeoir win election to the Irish presidency (largely ceremonial, but still) in face of the two big centre-right rival parties endorsing a common candidate, and the week since has been media pundits busy with downplaying Catherine Connolly’s historic margin

It’s really noticeable how much whiter Hollywood movies became in the Eighties. To use a franchise for illustration, this is what the mix of extras was like on ‘Star Trek the Motion Picture’ in 1979

A very weird article, which carefully doesn’t mention those disastrous ‘other’ (Tory) Chancellors here. Oh, and apparently Kemi Badenoch is going to be a sober pair of hands 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

And this isn’t really true either. Modern Defence Forces claims a number of origin points, including the Irish Volunteers (est. 1913), the IRA and the Defence Forces Act of 1923, none of which centrally involved Collins (and like the Provisional Govt, the National Army was a weird quasi-legal body)

Does Jennifer Double-Barrelled not realise that the Triple Lock is there explicitly to ensure Irish soldiers only serve on genuine international missions with the UN? Collins would be turning in the grave at these modern John Redmonds, so eager to see Irish troops die abroad on imperialist missions

There’s been a really weird neo-Redmondite fetishism of Parnell, who would’ve had nothing to do with it ideologically. I guess O’Connell has now been adopted as Michéal Martin’s choice of proxy for JohnR
