Bereft by Diane Keaton’s passing. Dressed like her throughout university. Watched all her movies. She was my whole personality before it was even a thing. I simply can’t believe we’re to continue on without her.

Bectu union boss Philippa Childs slams results of Gregg Wallace inquiry as a "real failure by [production company] Banijay to take these issues seriously and act accordingly." This point is spot on. Increasingly feels like Groundhog Day when it comes to inadequate action by prodcos/channels 👇

Really enjoyed this Observer profile of Keir Starmer from his biographer Tom Baldwin. This graf, in particular, is excellent. observer.co.uk/news/politic...

A Guardian story yesterday insinuated that Stewart likely self-funded Chronology, but her response is visceral. "Stories like this, and girls my age – I’ve been doing this forever. I’m 35 years old. Let’s fucking go. Are you kidding me? This is not something that I should have to fight so hard for."

Strong words from global film & TV industry orgs re: US trade war and attacks on AVMSD (among other regulation): "We're witnessing aggressive attempts by powerful political & corporate actors to dismantle regulatory protections that ensure the diversity & accessibility of cultural
expression."

Of the speeches: Clive Myrie was one of the only BAFTA winners tonight to acknowledge the indie sector and small prodcos. Barely any mention overall of industry’s freelancers or wider problems. (Pictured is Ashley Walters, who presented an award.)

And now an official statement from the Canadian Media Producers Association as well: "The proposed actions outlined in US President Donald Trump’s announcement will cause significant disruption and economic hardship to the media production sectors on both sides of the Canada-US border." #Tariffs

The British Film Commission have just released a statement saying more info is needed about Trump's exact plans:

"We will be meeting with Government and our industry policy group in the coming days to discuss further."

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy (speaking at an event in India!) appears to have kiboshed the prospect of a streaming levy for UK film and TV before it's even formally proposed to DCMS by the industry. Looks like enhanced tax credits could be the way forward. variety.com/2025/tv/news...

Channel 4's greenlit a new drama with Keeley Hawes & Paapa Essiedu as a nun & priest falling in love. No doubt it will be brill as it's written by Jack Thorne, but is there no one else available to write UK scripted series anymore? JT gets shows greenlit/financed but where's the next gen of writers?

Oh, industry hacks. We never know what we're talking about or how anything works until we're writing favourably about your new project. That interview with WBD movie bosses Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca... Oy.
April 14, 2025 at 2:24 PM
UK streaming levy news will be welcomed by some, but not all drama producers are for it. Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland has come out saying increased tax credits for mid-range productions is the better way forward. Certainly could be more realistic (& quicker) given climate of US protectionism.

Here’s our #BPGAwards committee last night: me, the indefatigable Ros Urwin and producer extraordinaire Sara Brady. Spoke to these women more than my own family these last few months putting our awards together. What a ride. I’ll miss working with them dearly.

James Corden and Ruth Jones came to our BPG Awards tonight (they won Best Comedy for Gavin and Stacey) and I was told I delivered a tidy What’s Occurin’ on stage, so looks like this Canadian has finally earned her place in the U.K.

Guy Pearce is so blindingly good in The Brutalist, and all I can think about is how HBO cast him in Mare of Easttown and gave him all of five lines for a character that went absolutely nowhere.
