technology is fundamental, mysticism around it limits innovation

AI, web3, blockchain, Self-Sovereign Identity, Robotics, Integrations, Signals

I post about research backed implementation techniques and best practices.
Picked up Art of Computer Programming. Worth it for an old dog?

Intro so far is pretty compelling and reaffirming that I'm not insane or clueless at least.

There are federations that function, and they are more than just mastodon.

The internet was not designed to be centralized, what we built was co-opted. Re-claim your common space.

ShotSpotter can “misclassify fireworks or sounds from cars as gunshots, and that company employees can alter evidence; during a 2016 police shooting trial in Rochester, a ShotSpotter employee admitted to reclassifying sound from a helicopter to a bullet at the request of police.”
Why Dayton Quit ShotSpotter, a Surveillance Tool Many Cities Still Embrace - Bolts
Julio Mateo and other activists in Dayton, Ohio, tried for years to get police to ditch one of the most controversial trends in law enforcement surveillance technology.  In 2019, the... Read More

If we’re offering some grace to Bluesky, we could also offer it to people who are understandably upset at being dehumanized by bigoted scum on a new platform that got their hopes up. I mean I assume there’s that much grace to to around.

They will keep going silent.

At some point in the weekend one of the more unhinged users posts things that violate ToS like threatening (or stuff that can be framed as such)

My hottest take about free speech: the ACLU was on the right side of Skokie, but the subsequent 40 years of high school pedagogy about the case have been an unmitigated disaster, creating a generation of people who seriously think that being nice to Nazis is not on legally required but a moral good.

They have no excuse now.

Now for the rest. Just so it's made very clear.

I've been reading Mansik for years, I still don't agree with the moderation theorem, it mainly applies to super large sites that IMO are an aberration when it comes to social systems.

they aren't supposed to get to a million+ users in a single system.

what we are experiencing is corp capture.

only time will tell, though the past has already said a lot.
I have made decisions, and made mistakes.

those have caused harm to real people, including Black folks, including really great+knowledgeable Black folks who supported Bluesky.

I'm sorry. feel pretty bad about it. it sucks.

re/earning their trust, and everybody else's trust, will be hard.

There are three kinds of people on bsky right now:

1: "we will burn this place to the ground"

2: "what racism? I just logged on"

3. "and how does that make you better than a nazi, if you hate nazis?"

Be 1. If you're 2, catch up and be 1. Don't be 3 for fuck's sake.

For bsky to succeed it needs to get large enough to be the place you come to share information. Right now, unfortunately, it is the place you come for vibes and drama, and that is a dead end.
