Read this! Really creeped me out. I didn't know much about The Years of Lead in Italy, or really of Turin. Very interesting, I'll be thinking about it for a while. The themes of paranoia, surveillance, the collective oversharing/tension but still so lonely... all applicable today. #booksky 📚💙 💙📚

57 pages in, astonishing how misread it is. Nabokov makes the narrator insufferable & unreliable from the jump. He is detestable in many ways. The prose is really amazing. The section where he describes himself as a spider in a web; You’re caught in the words he manipulates.

What an odd little book! Both charming and off-putting. Creepy and pastoral. I kept picturing the characters looking like they were claymation in Tim Burton style. Reminded me of Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle! I recommend, especially if you like that one!

It begins mid-flood, ducks swimming in the drawing-room windows, “quacking their approval” as they sail around the room. “What about my rose beds?” demands Grandmother Willoweed. Her son shouts down her ear-trumpet that the garden is submerged, dead animals everywhere, she will be lucky to get a bunch. Then the miller drowns himself . . . then the butcher slits his throat . . . and a series of gruesome deaths plagues the villagers. The newspaper asks, “Who will be smitten by this fatal madness next?” Through it all, Comyns’s unique voice weaves a text as wonderful as it is horrible, as beautiful as it is cruel. Originally published in England in 1954, this “overlooked small masterpiece” is a twisted, tragicomic gem. Read it and encounter what Graham Greene called “the strange off-beat talent of Miss Comyns and that innocent eye which observes with childlike simplicity the most fantastic or most ominous occurrence.”
