McCartney: "We got an Ivor Novello Award for the score – for the best film song that year, a piece called Love In The Open Air."

The Beatles add several overdubs to Penny Lane. They include rhythm guitar, bass guitar, drums, congas (played by John Lennon), piano (by George Martin), backing vocals and handclaps.

At the end of the session, producer George Martin tells them: "Congratulations, gentlemen, you've just made your first number one."
