Love how this documentary is perfectly pitched (haha) for an American audience. Like: sun rising over the fields - Shohei Ohtani was born in a cornfield in rural Japan. Cut to Othani: There were no other baseball players around, just a broken old bat and a golf ball...

I know. Adding a 90000 foot ballroom to the White House sounds like a frivolous idea… but hear me out

“Surely the parents heard what was happening to music at that hour…A cracker kid in a designated white house in a black neighborhood off in fly-bitten Mississippi was about to let loose the secret beat of race music, forever blowing away the enriched-flour, box-stepping public.”

That these two things can happen on the same day is mind bogglingly ironic.

@cemurphy.bsky.social not quite creative enough for your sensibilities, but could be a great nemesis to your bunny to love.

Have to post about this masterpiece. It’s easily in the top four of books I’ve read, right up there with Iceberg Slim’s Pimp, Malcolm X’s Autobiography and Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Witty, heartbreaking always compassionate. Do yourselves a favor and pick it up.

“REB SAMUEL hummed Chassidic hymns as he worked at his machine in the umbrella store. He was trying to forget America. But who can do that? It roared in the street outside, it fought against him from the lips of his own children. It even reached into his synagogue, and struck at his God.”

“On sunshiny days the whores sat on chairs along the sidewalks. They sprawled indolently, their legs taking up half the pavements. People stumbled over a gauntlet of whores' meaty legs.”

If you’re gonna write about a genocide, this is how you do it. Trying to save your spirit through trying to save your people’s sprit and failing at both. What I felt most was the slippery feel of all this history disappearing with each page I turned. Incredible. @sgj.bsky.social thank you for this.
