It’s an intriguing topic. Your example of color is great. We can’t deliberately imagine a new color. But our brains can. For example, magenta is an imaginary color.

My physics professor in 11th grade back in Mumbai defined imagination as “mental manipulation of past experiences.” I don’t think it is perfect but it applies to many situations
