Tiny detail: it was 2008. The bill passed the Commons select committee stage in 2005.
Here’s me celebrating the passage of the Act in 2008 (back row) and at the opening of the line in 2022.
At the Act celebration party, Keith Berryman joked that Crossrail was first put forward as a scheme in 1904!

Also: I’ve spent the last five years working for the joint venture that has built the UK’s longest rail viaduct, near where I’ve lived for 30 years. It is breathtakingly beautiful.
One objector told me railways didn’t belong in the countryside. I told him the nineteenth century would beg to differ.

Joelle Taylor has set me on fire tonight with her brilliant mash-up of the amazing Maryville and the conversation she had with Travis Alabanza. Buy Maryville if you haven’t already. www.bloomsbury.com/uk/maryville...

One of the activities here today is zining, creating tiny pamphlets.
This appealed to the primary school teacher in me, so I sat for an hour and wrote about Rosemary Manning, whose stories about a little girl and a dragon so entranced me as a child and whose life as a lesbian deserves to be known.

On the one hand, I’m delighted to be here today and to see the amazing LGBT+ focus of the event.
On the other hand, there’s the Guardian Foundation, representing a newspaper that daily makes it more difficult for trans people through their editorial policy. A shame.

This is the virtual equivalent of me standing with a placard beside every mention of evil cunts Palantir: my surreptitious Whatsapp message to a colleague in 2023 while the evil cunts pitched to us.

Poor Jago, Gussie and Romy. Poor husband Nick, whose IT business isn’t making any money. Poor Shetland pony Olly. Perhaps they might have to sell their Landrover. Or let one or two of the seven bedrooms. It’s the “I’m too impoverished to…” season for poor Flora. www.edp24.co.uk/lifestyle/20...
