"I had not been everyone's first image of a leader...I was a very ordinary person who found themselves in a set of extraordinary circumstances. But I had been a leader. And I had done it on my own terms."

Historic.

Because of his authenticity and belief that his city deserved better.

Because of what he stood for.

Because of who he is and the disgusting racism he was subject to.

Because of the attempts of the Democratic establishment + the right to defeat him.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

What might it be like to be deaf in Gaza? Not only have have deaf persons lost their homes, families, and loved ones, but they have also been unable to hear warning signs of drones and bombs.

This is Islamophobia.

Plain and simple.

The fact that some folks are now trying to reframe Cuomo's comment by clarifying that it was said in the context of him questioning whether Mamdani has sufficient experience to govern doesn't make it any less Islamophobic.

As we remember Mohamed today, I'm grateful that
@timep.bsky.social can honor his work by hosting a fellowship in his name to support journalists and media professionals in the policy space.

Through it, we've been able to host Reem Abbas, Zeead Yaghi, and Jean Kassir. I look forward to more.

Today would have been the 37th birthday of award-winning Egyptian investigative journalist Mohamed Aboelgheit. His powerful writing captivated readers, advanced accountability, and was dedicated to bringing about change for those most impacted.

Today, I'm holding in my heart Dr. Ossama Hassanein's family and his loved ones.

I hope they are one day comforted by his beautiful legacy that lives on in the countless initiatives and causes he supported without fanfare, but with sincere commitment.

May he rest in peace. 🤍

Deeply saddened to learn that Egyptian venture capitalist and entrepreneur Dr. Ossama Hassanein, a man who was deeply generous with his resources, time, and network, has passed away.

He was always willing to listen, to roll up his sleeves, and to help.

Thinking of Lebanese friends today who mark six years since mass protests began that would come to be known for the slogan كلن يعني كلن, a call to hold the entire political elite to account.

May you one day see a Lebanon able to overcome the impunity crisis holding it back. 🤍

Today, Syria's interim President Sharaa traveled to Moscow and shook hands with Putin -- the man who is a key reason as to why Assad remained in power past September 2015.

Holding the victims of Russia's crimes in Syria in my heart today and recommitting to accountability.

Today marks two years since 37 year old Lebanese video journalist Issam Abdallah was killed by Israeli tank-fire while filming across the southern border and wearing a press vest.

Holding Issam's loved ones in my heart today as they keep his memory alive and fight for accountability. 🤍

Yesterday marked 14 years since Egypt's Maspero Massacre.

Live ammunition was used, APCs ran over, and media incited against peaceful protesters who had gathered to demonstrate against an Aswan church's demolition.

28 were killed and hundreds were injured on that dark, dark day.

This week I'm in Madrid where I am humbled to be serving as a judge for the People’s Tribunal for Women of Afghanistan, an independent, civil society-led tribunal that is meant to offer a parallel form of justice in the absence of an ongoing international court proceeding.

⚖️ Significantly, the ruling states that noncitizens who are in the United States lawfully have the same free speech rights as citizens. The Trump admin has attempted to claim otherwise, but the judge explained this is a distinction not "found in our history or jurisprudence."
