Though I didn't have sheep on my #H5N1 #birdflu bingo card, by this point nothing should surprise me or us about this tricky, tricky virus.
The UK has found an infected sheep. Where there's one, there certainly could be more. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Characterisation of a novel merbecovirus lineage, HKU5-CoV-2, shows it can not only utilise hACE2 but do so more efficiently than it's predecessors.

What a nice surprise to see @socialinfluenza.bsky.social on Sky News this morning talking about the recent H5N1 human case in the UK. Very well laid out and communicated Ed 🙌

What was a suspected outbreak of #marburg in Tanzania has now been confirmed by laboratory diagnostic testing. We saw #Rwanda respond promptly and crush its own outbreak just weeks ago. I'm rooting for responders in Tanzania to do the same.

Interesting, would line up with children being heavily affected. Someone in our group also suggested enterovirus.

Not news that is nice to wake up to 🫠

The good: Mild case, presumably no adaptations like in Canadian case

The bad: Unknown source of infection, whole family reported symptoms

The ugly: Case numbers increasing and adaptation risk is still there

Huge support for this, global health is global! 🌍

There needs to be streamlined routes for early information sharing that is supported, facilitated and encouraged by institutions and governments.

The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. The virus potentially has a quasispecies at HA residue 226 (H3 numbering). This is bad news because we know that mutations at residue 226 can increase binding to human receptors. 1/

A sobering reminder that we can't become complacent with the current #H5N1 outbreak in North America. Concerning that this case also initially presented with conjuctivitis, as seen in milder cases in dairy workers, but has now progressed so severely in an otherwise healthy teenager.
