The olive grove is finally in, protected from ravenous deer by a seriously fierce electric fence. Ten manazanillos, ten kalamatas, and nine random strays should provide us, and everyone we know, with more olives than we can possibly consume. Such a lovely thing, getting more trees in the ground 🌳

The ume plums are always the first blossoms of the season in our orchard. For some reason, it's felt like a hard winter this year. Maybe it's climate anxiety, impending old age, the fact the world is falling apart around us... In any case, it's lovely to feel that perhaps spring isn't too far away.

It doesn’t look like much, but this is some of the 130 flag iris rhizomes I’ve just planted around our dam to pretty the place up a bit. The past summer and autumn have been so dry, the dam is almost empty. I’m trying to look on the bright side and use the opportunity to get in and plant stuff…

Our citrus trees are currently hosting a caterpillar party. These cuties are going to grow up to be dainty swallowtail butterflies - Papilio anactus. They eat an extraordinary amount, and our little trees are looking quite sad, but they're such beautiful butterflies, so it's totally worth the pain.

Folks who know I like to grow stuff gave me a bunch of random veg seedlings a few months back, mostly tomatoes. Here’s today’s harvest. Was glad they were ok after last night, when we got down to about 5 degrees. Bizarre for February.

I haven’t read any horror novels in a very long time. This was a Reddit recommendation, and my god, it’s a cracker of a read. Modern gothic, I guess, if I had to categorise it, with a touch of Lovecraft. And a wild twist at the end. I’ll be putting more of John Langan’s books of my must-read list.

This smol friend was hiding from the heat in our hazelnut bushes. They're a southern brown tree frog - Litoria ewingii. We have a large pond/small dam which is absolutely alive with frogs, and it's one of the joys of living here. Yes, it's a crap photo but I didn't want to disturb my little mate.
