It was a coincidence that Doula Day, a birthing unit closure announcement and the hearing for LD 1028 all occurred on the same day, but that proves our point. Addressing the crisis of lack of access to birthing healthcare is paramount to keeping birthing people and their families safe and healthy.

We then went in to testify for LD 1028, which would establish a task force to study equitable access to maternal health care and birthing facilities. In the past decade, 10 hospitals in Maine have closed their birthing units, with the latest closure at MDI Hospital announced the very same day.
