Next month, I will be giving a virtual poetry reading for my childhood synagogue. I’ll be reading my own poetry, as well as Sutzkever translations from the Architecture of Survival and Kerler translations from From a Bird’s Cage to a Thin Branch.

A little late but here is my #tub’shevat poem, which originally appeared in Valparaiso Poetry Review.

Holocaust Remembrance Day seems like a good time to reshare it. The seven streets referred to in the poem are the seven streets of the Vilna Ghetto. Here is a photo of Vilna, taken the last time I was there.

A week ago Rina Sutzkever, the daughter of Avrom Sutzkever, passed away. She was Sutzkever’s second child; the first was murdered in the Vilna Ghetto immediately after being born. Rina gave me permission to translate her father’s work and this poem, “Toys” is the first translation I ever completed.

I finally have a copy of Hideouts; Architecture of Survival, the book accompanying the museum exhibit of the same name, which was was at the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt this past spring and summer. I am honored to have been asked to translate nine poems from Sutzkever’s Geheymshtot for it.
