Their arrival changed everything: how we move, how we hunt, how we fight. We found new honour in their theft: to take someone’s mobility and increase your own strength. For our spiritual reality, we learned many teachings that we still thank Sunkawakan for. For our material reality, we learned one: There is nothing that can come to our home that we cannot strengthen ourselves with. BODIES Stories about mechs are stories about bodies. They provide us with a lens to discuss the ways that bodies are broken, analyzed, and commodified. To learn and master a mech parallels the experience of learning your own self. They provide an abstraction from violence: to rip the arm off a human is grotesque, to rip the arm off of a robot is a show of strength. What does it mean to step inside and embody a different being? Riding out to defend your community is honourable, there’s no question about that. A chassis of steel and body of stone are both equally capable of causing destruction far beyond their intention. Your people will care about this, your enemies do not. When we rode out to battle, we’d paint our faces to intimidate our enemies and hide our actions from the spirits. Does a cockpit do the same?
