The largest tree ever recorded was the Noosack Giant. It was a towering Douglas-fir tree that reached 465 feet into the sky. In 1897, the tree was cut down in order to make a bunch of stupid bullshit. No tree that tall has ever been found ever again. This is what the NYTimes said when it happened.
