Incubation times.

This is the time between getting infected and developing symptoms of an infectious disease. Typically this is measured in days, sometimes weeks.

It seems something technical. Why would understanding this matter to you?

Essential reading from @mtosterholm.bsky.social and Zeke Emanuel in @nytimes.com.

RFK Jr doesn’t need to ban vaccines to get people to stop vaccinating. He’s already racked up a sizable body count just by casting doubt. Imagine what he will do with a bigger platform

Opinion | What R.F.K. Jr. Might Do on Vaccines
As the nation’s top health official, he could discourage vaccine research and production, and dissuade Americans from getting shots.

This is a great thread about the potential impact of some of the mutations found in the H5N1 virus from the patient in BC.

A lot of people want to know what this means for pandemic risk and the answer is a very complex but unsatisfying “we don’t know”. Host adaptation is complicated.
The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. The virus potentially has a quasispecies at HA residue 226 (H3 numbering). This is bad news because we know that mutations at residue 226 can increase binding to human receptors. 1/

I think in the near future, it will be especially important to have effective science communicators. As someone who has been doing this for a while, I thought it might be useful to explain my major principles for science communication that I use in my own work 🧵:

Thanks to the first Canada acquired H5N1 case, there’s an uptick in “bird flu pandemic imminent” and “omg it’s gone H2H!” posts. Those are not accurate.

However, given the situation in the US, I have some real concerns about this that grow progressively more grave.

Social media has been flooded today with stories of Trump voters who are shocked to learn that tariffs will raise consumer prices as reporters are covering that information.
