TL;DR
You can't just implement a new/different grading system and hope it works.
You must change how instruction is designed and delivered.
You must engage students in the process every step of the way.

I also do not believe the whole "grades are motivators" ... for a certain set of students, sure. For the students who benefit most from a no-zero system, absolutely not. But, it's an easy fix to a system that requires a fundamental shift in practice.

gradebook. Formative tasks must build skill and content knowledge needed to complete the graded summative tasks. Also a vital piece is the conversations happening with sts about what the system is, how it works, and why it is beneficial. And those conversations are not one-and-done...but continuous.

instructional design. One of the major problems with implementing a no-zeros or SBG system is in the initial rollout. Training on how to design instruction in such as system cannot be overlooked. You cannot do what you always did before and just decide some assignments don't need to go into the
