Wow, I hope you are comfortable with horror/thriller elements because this book I am about to recommend can be brutal but is worth it. If not, Dan Simmons is a very diverse author and I would advise everyone to read at least one book of his. Bonus! Drood is AMAZING if you love Dickensian mystery.
