"Radio Free Europe" è operativa dagli anni Cinquanta e nel corso della Guerra fredda fu essenziale per far arrivare l’informazione libera nei paesi che appartenevano al blocco sovietico. Anche oggi mantiene un ruolo importante in paesi dove gli altri media sono censurati o in zone di guerra:
