“Enough Already!” by Gwen Manfrin. Because honestly, who among us hasn’t wanted to throw our hands up and declare we’ve officially reached our limit? This painting captures that universal moment when life hands you one too many lemons and you’re fresh out of sugar. Gwen’s brilliant at capturing those unconscious body language moments we all recognize – you know, like when someone’s explaining cryptocurrency for the third time and your soul starts leaving your body. Her figures exist outside of time and place, letting their poses do all the talking (and boy, do they have things to say). This California artist has been perfecting the art of visual storytelling since graduating from UCLA in 1977 (yes, that makes her cooler than all of us). Her work graces collections from SunMicrosystems to Nordstrom – proving that good art travels everywhere, even to places where people argue about operating systems and debate whether beige is a color.

She was not interested in capturing conventional beauty which she found boring, and was fascinated by the peculiarities of average people and marginalised members of society. Back in England she applied these techniques not only to create wonderful woodblock prints of British landscapes. She went one step further and began to use these Japanese printmaking methods for the Western technique of linocuts with stunning results.

They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To (2008) by South African artist, Mary Sibande (born in 1982). Sculpture - fibreglass, silicone, fabric Life-size This is one of a series of sculptures created between 2008 and 2010 by Johannesburg-based artist Mary Sibande in which she depicts her alter-ego Sophie, a domestic worker who finds refuge in dreams where she emancipates herself from the realism of an ordinary existence cleaning other people’s homes. Mary Sibande developed the character of Sophie in series of life-size sculptures and photographic prints. According to Sibande they are a collection of fantasies and imagined narratives, developed from her personal history. Her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all maids. “I wanted to celebrate them (the domestic workers). I think they are heroes. It was so hard to put food on the table.” Sibande uses the human figure as a vehicle for exploring identity in context of a post-colonial South Africa. In the process she also comments on the stereotypical depictions of especially black women in South Africa. Sophie’s Victorian costumes are handmade mainly from the blue fabric typical of domestic workers' uniforms and workmen’s overalls in South Africa, and accompanied by the white apron and "doek" (headscarf) typical of what "maids" were/are required to wear at work. Her sculptures and photographic work depicting the domestic work are not intended to evoke feelings of shame, anger, or humiliation, but rather to transcend this reality from which the domestic worker is able to liberate herself, the implication being that we can all be freed from the past - particularly significant for the victims, perpetrators, and beneficiaries of Apartheid. In these works Sophie’s eyes are closed reflecting the notion that daydreams are products of inner dialogue. Source: gnvisual wordpress com .
